TAKING FRENCH COURSES IN HONG KONG
Starting to learn a new language is a very important decision. Therefore before starting to take any French course in Hong Kong , you should keep the following considerations in mind.
If you are serious about it, it will require a long-term commitment and a high dose of self-motivation. Many people believe that learning a new language like French is something that can be easily achieved. If not easy people generally have a clear misconception of the number of hours of dedication that it requires until you somehow can start to communicate effectively in that language. Another issue is the vague concept of having an “intermediate level”. Mastering a language requires many skills. You can be very good at reading and terrible at listening if you don’t have enough exposure to native people and therefore it can be very frustrating.
Is for these reasons that selecting the right place and the right teacher to learn a new language like French is so important. Is almost like a lifetime journey that you will engage with. If you first French teacher is not skillful enough in his or her lessons to motivate you during the classes you are most likely to give up quick. It is very important therefore that you select carefully when and where you start learning French.
It might sound obvious to say this but you should start learning with someone that actually has teaching qualifications. Why mention this? There are some websites on the Internet like tutoroo that offer tutoring services with French teachers that you can hire very cheaply. It might look very attractive to hire one, but would you engage yourself learning a language with someone that is not even a teacher just because is cheap? While it might look cost effective, you might end up giving up on learning French soon. The teacher needs to know how to structure the class properly, how to guide you through the learning experience so that you don’t feel frustrated and how to give you the right resources for you to revise or self-study. If you have a limited budget then don’t hire a cheap private French teacher but rather spend the money in a small group French class. The money will be more wisely invested. Small group lessons if conducted by professionals create a learning environment, which is as good as having a private French class.
If you start learning French and after 1 or 2 lessons you don’t feel any chemistry with your teacher then please do request to be changed into a different class or get a different teacher. Having a passionate teacher to guide you or someone that you have a good chemistry is as important as having a qualified French native teacher. If you are serious about learning French you need to understand that is going to be a long term project and therefore you must have someone with the capacity to motivate you at first and keep you motivate along the way.
Another tip is if after a few months you feel frustrated with your learning process do not worry, just take a one month break and give it a go again 1-2 months later. However do not stop learning for a very long time. Students that stop lessons for more than 3 months they would need to re-invest time revising what they have learned before as they don’t have the abilities fresh and this will slow down your learning process.
In Hong Kong there are multiple schools offering French courses or private French lessons. One of the most famous ones is the French Teachers Association of Hong Kong. Go for either a private class or a small group of 2-5 students, as these are the most efficient learning environments. Joining a big group class of 20 students might seem quite attractive as due to the class size the school can offer you a more competitive price. However those classes are more “lecture style” where you sit there the teacher talks and there is less chances for interaction. Although the teachers are professional and know how to create interactive class dynamics, there is a fix progress planned for the class so if you are slow learner you will find yourself lost in the course soon enough as the teacher can’t wait for you. On the other hand if you are a fast learner you will feel bored and might even lose the motivation to learn after some time. If you join a small group class of 2-5 students then the teacher can adapt the class speed to the progress of the small group and if there is one specific student that goes slower or faster than the rest then it is much easier to recommend him or her to join another group adapted to his or her learning speed.
Last but not least, you and not only your teacher play a very important role in the learning process. You will need self-discipline and commitment to revise regularly or not to skip one class when you feel under the weather or your friend has invited you for a nice meal instead. What does it mean revise regularly? Depends. If you are having lessons once a week 2 hours each class, then you should spend at least 30 minutes a week to revise the things you have learned the class before before going into the new class. The rule is easy, you should revise one time per class that you take. The amount of time you spend on revision you can decide yourself, just take as long as you need to understand the concepts that were taught the class before. If you want to progress faster you can do so at a beginners level using some useful learning apps like duolingo. They will help you acquire more vocabulary but don’t expect to be able to speak French by just using these apps as you will be missing two of the most important skills of learning a language which is the listening and speaking when having real interactions with humans. If you are at an intermediate level or advanced level already, you will find watching movies in French with English or French subtitles a great way to improve your French naturally without making much effort!CONTACT US
